Where do they get the name meanings in the bible? isnt these another indication of the bible's "fictionality"

im quoting from someone's answer.

"Nimrod (which means rebellious) built the Tower of Babel in an attempt to get to heaven. "

i know parents dont name their children rebelious..

Babel means "confusion". (you name your city confusion. what a great idea.)

Where do they get the name meanings in the bible? isnt these another indication of the bible's "fictionality"
"Babel" is composed of two words, "baa" meaning "gate" and "el," "god." Hence, "the gate of god." A related word in Hebrew, "balal" means "confusion."

No, this does not indicate the Bible is fictional. Just because you don't understand doesn't mean it's not the truth. The Bible is historically and archaeologically accurate.
Reply:It was named gate of God because those building it wanted to reach heaven. They may have had another name for it, but it was never completed. Since it wasn't completed it really wasn't named. It is an event along with the structure that is "remembered" as the Tower of Babel. Better? Report Abuse

Reply:Sorry, but what exactly is your question???
Reply:The Bible is a fictional story. seriously, who the hell can walk on water? its impossible. all of it is a bunch of bs.
Reply:You and that person know nothing about ancient Middle eastern customs....so the both of you are stupid for ranting about something you are not educated enough to critique.
Reply:You have it all backwards. Those names existed before their meaning did. I will give you a few examples ,the word hooker , meaning a prostitute came from the civil war General Hooker. And the word side burn came from the civil war General Burnside.Allot of words were created because of people's influence on history. The word pasteurize, as in pasteurized milk came from Dr, Pasteur who came up with the idea. Do you understand now .The word crap came from the inventor of the modern toilet, Thomas Crapper.
Reply:actually, jewish names are just hebrew words, or phrases. my jewish name is ayelet which means deer. one of my sisters jewish name is bat-shir which means daughter of song. my brother is ari, which means lion. my cousin's is issachar which means "there is a reward" and my friend's is idan which means "historical period". my father's is amichai which means "my people live"

there are not really any hebrew names that are just babble, they are all words or phrases pretty much, even israeli town names
Reply:The names in the bibles come from the respective times in questions. I believe over the years the languages themselves have evolved due to trade with other cultures, so it makes sense that their meanings would be different.
Reply:Nimrod's name in his own language probably didn't mean rebellious. But when it got translated into Hebrew, it did.

A modern example is how Hamas is just an acronym in Arabic, but in Hebrew, it is a word which means "Violence." (probably not a coincidence by the way).
