I would like to know how to say my name in german(Andrew) and any meanings?

Andreas or Andres, short form Andi

meaning derived from Greek andros = man, human

pronunciation (pretty tricky)

Andreas

An = un (important)

dre = dread (long, vowel like 鈥檅ury鈥?but sharper)

as = us (he sees us)

Andres

An = see above

dres = see above (like he says, but sharper, higher)

You are welcome!

I would like to know how to say my name in german(Andrew) and any meanings?
This is how you say your name in German

Reply:Ich heisse andrew, (pronounced ik highsa)
Reply:I don't know much German, even though I'm part German. However your name gets translated, hopefully it will mean Andrew.
Reply:I think it means man. I'm not sure on the German version. My guess is Andre.

Do people really think about the meanings of names?

I was researching a question for someone and I saw some names that have become common and the meanings were not good. One was dog etc... When I named my kids I always checked meanings.

Just wondering

Do people really think about the meanings of names?
I find name meanings much more important than the name itself.

Even if it's a pretty name, why would you choose it if it has a horrible meaning?
Reply:not the first thing i think about. i would check before i decided on the name 100% and if it was something like dog i would consider not using it but its not big on my priority list. i think people are this way because not only is it hard to find a name they love with a meaning to match but most likely no one else but them is going to search the meaning of their kids name.
Reply:To be honest, no. I don't really care about the meaning of a name unless I'm writing a story and even then sometimes I don't look up the meanings.

I'm not going to not pick a name just because of the meaning. Like for example, I love the name Portia but I shouldn't use it because it means "pig"? No thanks.
Reply:people often pick name kids for these reasons: it's cute, it sound cool, no one has it, tradition all first male kids have dad's first name, week minded young couple giving into demands of parents / grand parents in naming kids, weak school systems graduating students who are below grade school reading level giving rise to misspelled or creative spelled kids names which make getting a better paying job impossible (victims of political correctness). it's better johnny feel good about himself than read or write at a high school level. can you spell cat johnny? "kaate". very good johnny!!!!!!!!! you get an A+++++
Reply:I think most people don't look at the meaning of a name. Sometimes, it becomes trendy during a certain decade to know the meaning. For the most part, I think most people just go by how the name sounds and if it appeals to them.
Reply:Haha no! I don't even know the meanings of my children's names! I will search them now and write them here:

Danielle (God is my judge) Morgan (Great circle)

Brady (Decedent of Bradant) Jack (Diminutive form of John)

Haha now i know!
Reply:I like to know what the meanings of name are, but one of my favorite names right now (Cameron) does not have a very god meaning (Crooked nose), but that wouldn't stop me from using it.
Reply:I think most people do , I looked up meanings before naming my three children if they had been bad I probably would have reconsidered my choices !

I like certain names and might make a list then I look at the meanings to possibly narrow them down! ~I LOVE DEREK
Reply:my name is chakane

i knew this one kid named yoshi[from mario]

i guessed thier parents liked the mario series
Reply:I would rather pick a name I liked rather than liked the meaning of it.

We did like the name Lillith though, until we found out it means 'devil'
Reply:I Do !! I Did And Im and Angel!! B/G
Reply:yes....i did!!!!....my son is called leon....before he was born i did a tarot reading...the strenght card came out(a woman wrestling a lion)...he was also born under the star sign leo!!!!
Reply:I made sure my daughter's name had meaning.

Her name is Emma and means " whole and universal "
Reply:My mom checked when she named me. Mine is "God is my judge"
Reply:I don't.
Reply:I think about half of all 'namers' do.
Reply:I do
Reply:it's awesome to have both a cool name and meaning behind it :)

How do I go about finding the roots as well as the meanings of words and names.?

Where did the word yugoslavia come from , and what did it mean originally, and, what does it mean now.

Where can I find the derivation of words?

How do I go about finding the roots as well as the meanings of words and names.?
Your best resource is the Oxford English Dictionary. It can likely be found at any college or university library near your home, and as it is a reference book, you can look at it without being a student or faculty member. The reason this book is so useful is that it gives the roots of the word, when it was first used in the English language, its etymological roots, etc.

Is there any other meanings to these names?

Kevin and Nicholas

I know Kevin means:

Handsome; Handsome at birth.

Is there anything else it means?

I know Nicholas means:

Victorious; from the Greek Nikolaos, meaning victory of the people.

Is there anything else it means?

Is there any other meanings to these names?
You've pretty much got it!

Kevin comes from the old Irish name Coemgen -- coem means "kind, gentle, or handsome" and gein means "at birth." So in addition to meaning "handsome at birth," the name could also mean "kind and gentle at birth."

Nicholas means "victory of the people," just like you said.

Of course, names also have meaning in their historical and cultural context, so you may want to look up some famous Kevin's and Nicholas's to see what "meaning" their lives may have added to the names. (The name Nicholas was borne by a saint, five popes, and two Russian czars.)

I like the fact that you are using meaning to help you decide between your last two picks. That's a great idea when both names seem equally good to you; it often helps tip the scale a bit in one direction or the other. Good luck! I know this is a tough decision.
Reply:Nicholas: victory of the people

Kevin: handsome, beautiful

Yeah, so the meanings I found were basically the same as you came up with.
Reply:No, sorry.

It's like a chair mean it's a chair and a hairbush means it's a hairbrush. That's what that word means. If you're looking for a different meaning try a different word or name.

What are some names of poems who's meanings are often debated because of different point of view?

For example: the poem "My Papa's Waltz" can be viewed as a poem about a little child dancing with thier father before bedtime or as a poem about an abusive father beating his child up. I'm having trouble finding poetry that has either a deeper meaning than the surface words or that can be seen in two different ways. Please help!! =) Thank you!

What are some good Japanese family names and their meanings?

I can't find anything good in my sources.

What are some good Japanese family names and their meanings?
鈴木 島男 = suzuki shimao

すずき しまお

suzu(鈴) すず ,means= a bell ( rings, jingles,tinkles)

ki (木) き ,means= tree

shima8 島) しま , means= island

otoko ( 男) おとこ , means = men

suzuki shimao ( 鈴木 島男) (^.^)
Reply:Until 150 years ago, many Japanese people could not have their family names, but only Samurai and Shounin (dealers) class are allowed to do. Most peasants are called their names and the names of their home villages.

Then Meiji revolution, known as Meiji Ishin, abolished the regulation, and all Japanese have to come to have their own family names.

We don't get family names in the context of which 'good' or not. But we know which names have histories. Tokugawa is well known for descendants of Shoguns. '----miya' is known for relatives of Tennou family, but this is just a possibility. And there are some distinguished business founders' family names.

Well, Kanjis have meanings and give us some impression, but it is not a deal. Family names are just a sign for a person. Family names used to be treated for a representation of their relatives, but now are not treated with importance.

We sense some beauty or easiness to write in some family names. But It depends on the composition of Kanjis, mostly its shapes.
Reply:haruno means something like blooming fields

So haruno hana means Blooming fields of flowers.

But idk if people name their children hana.

Does anyone research name origins and meanings?

OR is that only something I do. I have Irish and English and Latin Surnames in all my children, most of their names are unique and unusual but of centuries old origins.....I was just wondering if ANYONE else trys to research a names meaning and origins? All of my children are either musically gifted/artistic with the ability for creative writing and two of my children have nation wide modelling contracts. I do think names are significant to a childs development of character.

Does anyone research name origins and meanings?
It has been a hobby of mine since I was about 11 to research names. Now that I am planning a family, I am researching names even more to find one with meaning and history, but also one with personal meaning. To me, unusual is not as important as meaningful and the name being weighty with history.
Reply:No you are not alone. I do that as well. I have checked my first and middle name are they are both, Latin and I not latin. My first name is means "christlike and annotated" while my middle name meaning true image. I really do not think the names are sinificant to a childs development, because I am no where near a saint, but I do like to may sure everyone is in peace or close to joy. But it is fun, I have checked for the meaning of the names I plan to name by children and they are all peaceful names. So I don't think its a problem.
Reply:Always research. I'll be damned if I'm going to name my kid something along the lines of "Sea of bitterness" because really, that's just harsh. I do believe names help shape a child's character. I'm always a fan of using names that have deep meaning to the family. My first born son will carry a middle name that has gone down the Irish side for ages.
Reply:yes I have to pick a name that means something . I would never name my something that doesn't have any significant meaning.
Reply:Yea, i research meanings...always have.

It's definately significant to me.
Reply:I do that

Is there a name for words with different meanings but same spelling: read read, lead lead, name more examples?

Homographs

A homograph is one of a group of words that share the same spelling but have different meanings (which is what you asked). When spoken, the meanings are sometimes, but not necessarily, distinguished by different pronunciations. A homograph can be either a homonym (same pronunciation but different meaning) or a heteronym (different meanings and pronunciations). The examples you listed are heteronyms.

There are lots of them, although they may vary depending on your dialect. Where I live, "permit" the noun and "permit" the verb both have the second syllable stressed!

Examples:

resume

buffet

address (noun and verb)

record

Here's a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Eng...

Is there a name for words with different meanings but same spelling: read read, lead lead, name more examples?
Homonyms

In linguistics, a homonym is one of a group of words that share the same pronunciation but have different meanings, and are usually spelled differently. Some sources only require that homonyms share the same spelling or pronunciation (in addition to having different meanings), but these are the definitions most other sources give for homographs and homophones respectively. The state of being a homonym is called homonymy. Examples of homonyms are stalk (which can mean either part of a plant or to follow someone around), bear (animal) and bear (carry), left (opposite of right) and left (past tense of leave). Some sources also consider the following trio of words to be homonyms, but others designate them as "only" homophones: to, too and two (actually, to, to, too, too and two, being "for the purpose of" as in "to make it easier", the opposite of "from", also, excessively, and "2", respectively). Some sources state that homonym meanings must be unrelated in origin (rather than just different). Thus right (correct) and right (opposed to left) would be polysemous (see below) and not be homonyms.

Reply:If you're talking;

'I read the book yesterday'

'Today I will read the book'

They have the same meanings, the only difference is that there is a change in tense - i.e. Present/Future and past.

Regarding the lead and lead example - I think they're called Heteronyms.

Another good one is minute (size) and minute (time)

Oops no, I'm confused - they have differnt pronounciations!
Reply:They are called 'heteronyms.'

The one that comes to mind immediately is:

wind - wind (wind / wynd)

What is the name for when words sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings?

you know, like ferry and fairy

What is the name for when words sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings?
Actually, it's homophones.
Reply:Homonyms.
Reply:homophones, but ferry and fairy (you pronouce the air in fairy, there's no air in ferry) don't sound the same and neither do hair and here.

Hare and hair and hear and here however do sound the same.

"Onomonopeia is a word that sounds like the word or action it describes like buzz and pop"

That word is onomatopoeia
Reply:homophones
Reply:Homonyms are words which are spelled and pronounced the same, but have different meanings. (e.g- well- meaning better; well- meaning hole full of water)

Homophones have different spellings and meanings but identical pronunciation. (e.g. which and witch).
Reply:homophones
Reply:Homophones, not homonyms
Reply:FERRY AND FAIRY DO NOT SOUND THE SAME. YOU PROBABLY MEAN HAIR AND HERE. SORRY. I'M NOT SURE WHAT IT'S CALLED THOUGH.
Reply:The correct answer is "Homophones".The term derives from the root for sound 'phone/Phonic'.
Reply:homonyms.

Synonyms are different words with the same meaning.

Antonyms are words with opposite meanings.

Palindromes are words spelled the same forward and backward like racecar, civic, mom, dad etc.

Onomonopeia is a word that sounds like the word or action it describes like buzz and pop.
Reply:homonyms
Reply:its homonyms.but calling it as homophones is also correct.
Reply:they are homophones. words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings.

Reply:homonyms
Reply:homonyms. 'homo' from the Greek for same, and 'nym' from the Geeek for sound
Reply:Homophones, like "their", "there" and "they're".

Words that are spelled the same but have different pronounciations and meanings are homonyms e.g.:

Are there special meanings behind bird names? if so where can i find a list of them?

like for example my name lynn means waterfall/lake/ or body of water so do bird names have special meanings...there are meanings behind flower names to so shouldnt there be meaning behind bird names?

Are there special meanings behind bird names? if so where can i find a list of them?
Names of birds are often just descriptive - like red-headed woodpecker or painted bunting. Sometimes they're named after a scientist (Nuttall's woodpecker is an example of that) or, in the case of Anna's hummingbird, after a duchess. It's kind of fun to look at their scientific names too and figure out what they mean. Haliaeetus leucocephalus (bald eagle) means white-headed fish eagle, which is a very good description of a bald eagle. Some of them are even wrong! The white-winged dove was famously misnamed by the very guy who made up the scientific naming system in the first place. He named it Zenaida asiatica, thinking it came from Asia, when it's really a North American bird. I don't know if a simple list of these meanings exists. I know this stuff because I have a whole bookshelf full of books about birds and have studied the names because I find it interesting. I hope you enjoyed.
Reply:My cockatiels c alled Britney and its male. Say no more!
Reply:Yes they do have meanings! But I need to know what your bird is called?

When searching for a new domain name, what are the meanings of the following designations:?

.eu

Or maybe a better question would be what are the parameters for using the above.

(ie: for using .com, you need to be a commercial entity. For .gov, you need to be a government entity, etc.)

When searching for a new domain name, what are the meanings of the following designations:?
You are not completely correct. Anyone can register a dot com. Some of the others are country specific, such as .ca is only available to Canadian citizens, and .de is I believe only available to German citizens, and .uk to British, etc. Log onto a hosting site to find answers to the others.
Reply:I'm not sure of all of them, but

.eu is Europe

.de is Deutchland (Germany)

.bz is (I think) Brazil

.ca is of course Canada!

.edu is education

.org You must be a registered organization (charity or gov't)

.ws no idea

.info... well seems obvious... but don't know the perameters... might be something like .org... but with looser restrictions?

What are the meanings behind the names "jonas %26amp; gabriel"? From the book The Giver by Lois Lowry?
It's been too long since I've read The Giver. Jonas and Gabriel might be biblical references. The angel Gabriel and then Jonah and the whale (Jonah is sometimes referred to as Jonas).

I want to name my child something meaningful, but i don't know what. I want to name him/her along the lines of curious, observant, or something of the sort. Does anyone know a website that i can type in meanings and get names based on the meanings, instead of the other way around.

Reply:behindthename.com is fantastic and the most reliable site I have found. It is geared more toward etymology of names in general not just "baby names" like a lot of the other less reliable sites. It has a fantastic message board too with lots of knowledgeable people that post there.

PLZ tell me if u knw that meanings of My name (OMAIS)?? n tell me the exect reference.?

There is a tropical cyclone meaning " running around" with the same name as you. (USA) 2004

PLZ tell me if u knw that meanings of My name (OMAIS)?? n tell me the exect reference.?
Two people (maybe more by the time my answer is posted) have made good suggestions. I would add only this: (1) What's your ethnicity? That may have some bearing on the matter. (2) Have you asked your parents where they got your name? That seems a logical place to start.
Reply:"Omais is a Palauan word meaning running around." See web site below.

When thinking of baby names, are the meanings of the names important to you?

Yes. In my culture we believe that your name shapes your personality in a way, so I was careful when naming my daughter. For example, if your name means "strength" then that strength would be "woven" into your personality/character.

My family believe that if you name a child after another person that that child will bear whatever attributes (good and bad) including any illnesses from their name sake.

When thinking of baby names, are the meanings of the names important to you?
They are important to me, but not important enough to make that the only reason for choosing the name (specially if it's an ugly one! ^_^)

One of my favorite names for a girl is "Caledonia", which means "Scotland" or "From Scotland". Scotland is kind of my "dream country" - I've always wanted to go there - so the name has a special meaning to me. It also has a great nickname - "Calee"

:D
Reply:I would not change a name on meaning alone. Primarily for me it's about the sound and any associations (e.g. Adolf reminds people of Hitler). However, if a name sounds nice AND has a nice meaning, I would prefer it to a name that sounds nice but has a horrible meaning. So I do consider meanings, but they are not my priority. I am a bit of a name nerd and hang out on baby name forums, and in my experience most people are the same as me.
Reply:i dunno maybe i meen im only young so im not thinking bout that rite now but my mum nd dad r called Kirit and Tracy so they wanted to call there first child (my big sister) kayte for like the K and the T mixed together i duno how they wanted to apell it i think they wanted to spell it like katie not kayte but i kinda like the kayte anyways they didnt call her that bcuz wen she was born they thought she was beautiful and that she suited sara so basically some ppl dont really have meanings well i personally think its cheesy but i like cheesyyy !
Reply:As with many questions in life, the answer can be found in the dialogue of the films of Quentin Tarantino. Here, a line from Pulp Fiction serves the point nicely "I'm an American, our names don't mean ****." - Butch Coolidge.

Now, taking into consideration Gweneth Paltrow's daughter "Apple," or the New Jersey baby whose parents called him "Adolf Hitler Campbell."

The name needs to mean something to you.
Reply:For me I would have to say that I like a name that flows well together and is harmonious when you say it. I do also like names with specific meanings and would try to keep the names flowing well together as well as the meaning coinciding with each other.
Reply:no some old lady i did not even know told me this really long story about how her one relatives friend was named sarah and there was a sarah in the bible that had her first child at 93 and if you're as bored as i was, i think you know the answer to your question.

i like names for how they sound
Reply:Yes....Very.

My grandma died when I was 10. She was in love with Robins. So....I'm naming my child, If a girl Robin-Delilah, in honour of my grandma, also, I told my mother, it made her cry with happiness!
Reply:The most important, esp for girls because boys are like this is my name there it is cool, but girls, we take this sort of thing seriously lol, so i want a name with a beautiful meaning for them
Reply:It would when i have children, because i would like them to know that i had chosen a specific name for them that meant something to me.

If that makes any sense.
Reply:Yes, and no. Making sure your kid doesn't get picked on and made fun of because of his name is your first priority. NEXT, you can look a bit at the meaning of the names.
Reply:They aren't extremely important but if I liked a name and found out the meaning meant.. "fat ugly cow"... or something along those lines I'd definately reconsider.
Reply:No. But, when my mother named me, the meaning meant something. The meaning is a lie to me though! I'm nothing like the meaning, I'm quite the opposite! :P
Reply:Yea ... In my openion Yes .. it does matter...

because many time the situations are quite opposite to the name... means if somebody's name is "Rich" but in actually he is so poor....

so i think name does have some meaning ...
Reply:Yes.But it is your own decision to make. There are many names that have meanings. In my opinion Edward is a great name.

Ryan:)
Reply:Definitely! The meaning of a name is important. Try finding out the meaning of your name. It'll give you a new sense of purpose. =)
Reply:to me yes but im not trying to let it make or break my decision, i the end it depend on what me and my girl like best.

same for u
Reply:No. Not unless the meaning is too out there.

Otherwise, i just focus on the name itself.

Name meanings don't really effect anyone's life

very much.
Reply:no......................................... ...

......................thanks for the 2 points :)
Reply:Not really... I think of names which are going to be liked by the child later in life, and not going to get them teased!

I like, Ella, Lila, Lily, Ruby
Reply:I tend to concentrate on how the name sounds coming off of the tongue and whether or not it will scar a child for life.
Reply:sometimes because some people thinks your name mirrors your personality. so its quite important.
Reply:only if there were names i liked equally, i might choose by which name had the nicer meaning
Reply:Not really.

But if it was a really horrible meaning, I wouldn't use it.
Reply:Not particularly unless its an obvoius meaning
Reply:No, I just pay attention to how it sounds with the last name and if it could be made fun of.
Reply:Not at all. I've never met someone and thought, "Hmm, your name means ----." Who cares?
Reply:No, but if i did name my child, i would definatly look it up on the internet or something
Reply:not particularly
Reply:sometimes
Reply:Nope. It would be cool to jokingly brag, like my name means beautiful etc.

What are the greek and latin translations and meanings of my name, Kohleen?

http://www.behindthename.com/php/search....

So you would rather use the latin world for "girl", which is "puella" or "puera". I have to say, though, that in irish this word could have a slightly different meaning compared to latin. And it's difficult to translate names, especially if you want to translate a new name to an older language. In modern greek, it would be "kopela(魏慰蟺苇位伪)", "koritsi(魏慰蟻委蟿蟽喂)", and in ancient greek it would be something like "kori(魏蠈蟻畏)". But I suggest using the same name transcribed in foreign characters. In the case of Greek, "螝慰位委谓" or "K伪位委谓", depending on pronunciation.

What are the greek and latin translations and meanings of my name, Kohleen?
The female name Kohleen derives from the Greek name Kolina. I don't know if there is a Latin equivalent, but if there were it would almost certainly be spelled Collina - but that means 'situated on a hill' in Latin (adjective, fem. sing. nominative.)

The Devils name and their meanings?

I have asked a couple of questions on believing in the existence of the Devil and some of the answers have gotten me thinking on the meaning of the Devils name.

For example Lucifer means light bringer, many people also have said that devil means challenger. What about beezelbub, and I know there are more out there I just can't think of them all right now.

Thanks for your answers.

The Devils name and their meanings?
You are right Lucifer does mean light bringer. This name comes from his angelic beginnings as the herald of God, he brought forth his word and preceeded him. Because of the ancient comaprison between a supreme deity and the sun that long predates christianity God was seen as the form of the sun, and hence his herald was known as Light Bringer

Satan is a hebrew word meaning accuser, and represents his new role after the Fall as a challenger of Gods Ways, or perhaps from the alternate theory that this was always his role and that he never committed treason but has always been a challenger to test faith.

Beelzebub i didn't know the origin of but a quick search yielded that it was the name of an earlier god of the Philistines, and could have been a convenient name in current use that could have been used to represent a smaller being opposed to God.

Check out this site for some better info but be aware it has been tampered with recently
Reply:I know that "Satan" was taken from the Hebrew "Shaitan" and Lucifer was a Sun God.
Reply:Hmm, I'm thinking. Satan comes from the Arabic Shaitan, which means devil, but not any particular devil, I believe. Beelzebub might be a corruption of the god Baal.

And Hell comes from Hel, the Norse goddess of the underworld.
Reply:Ba鈥榓l Zeb没b might mean 'Lord of Zeb没b', referring to an unknown place called Zeb没b, or 'Lord of things that fly'

I want to know the meanings of "Abeeha" arabic name?

the word is "Qabeeha" but in day to day the Q becomes A and the egyption use it it means

abomination act, habit, person or thing that is hated

atrocious extremely bad or showing no ability to do something at all; wicked; vicious; cruel; savage; ruthless

atrocity an extremely cruel and violent action, especially during a war; brutality; enormity; cruelty; villainy; barbarity

enormity great wickedness

gross very unpleasant, or indecent

I want to know the meanings of "Abeeha" arabic name?
Never heard of such an arabic name ... it's just an arabic word ..

as for the meaning .. it really depends on the accent of who said the word .. if it was an Egyptian who said it .. well it means like "BAD" or "UGLY" very close from that meaning ..

But if who said it was an Arabian Gulf guy .. it would mean "I WANT IT" like if u c something and u say u want it ..

:D hope that helped

Im not having/thinking of having a baby any time soon, but i just wanted to know what people thought of the name Azura?

It means "sky-jewell" and i think it's amazing!

Does anyone know anyone with that name? Or heard of anyone with that name?

Thanks :)X

Do you like this girls name? And what other beautiful names are there with pretty meanings?
Azura doesn't literally mean 'sky-jewel'.

Azure is used as a synonym for blue or sky-blue, but the word 'azure' ultimately derives from Lapis Lazuli, which is a blue-coloured semi-precious stone. Lapis Lazuli means 'Lazvard Stone'. Hence, Azura means either 'blue' or 'Lazvard stone'.

How about:

Eirlys "snowdrop"

Endellion "fire soul"

Somerled "summer sailor"

Eirwen "snow-white"

Andromache "battle of a man" (seems somehow poetic)

Cassandra "shining upon man"

Vesper "evening star"

Evander "good man"

Does anyone know a good site for meanings of first names?

I need a site that will give me the meaning, origin and personal traits of names.

Does anyone know a good site for meanings of first names?
Here are the two BEST and most reliable sites for first-name meanings:

http://www.behindthename.com/

http://www.aboutnames.ch/

behindthename is especially good, with a number of added tools, including pages that compile all the names derived from the same root.

Unfortunately, the others folks have listed, like so many name sites and books (esp. for "baby names") are extremely uneven -- they combine material from many sources, some well-researched, some that is very sloppy or complete nonsense. . . and unless you've researched in this area for awhile and are familiar with a number of languages, it's very hard to tell which are reliable and which are not.

(One of my own 'quick tests' on these sites is to work through a list of names that are all derived from the same original name -- if their listings for the various names are inconsistent, I know their sources are... and that they have not worked through the discrepancies.)

By the way, many name books and sites tend to slip into providing flattering sounding meanings and descriptions of traits supposedly associated with the name. These are frequently completely made up by the writers (or sources they used). . . I learned that years ago, starting with mugs, etc. that listed my name with a 'meaning' or personality-description which I knew was complete hooey.

If you want OTHER tools along the same lines, there is what appears to be an EXCELLENT desktop tool with some 8,000 first names in its database, that goes much further than the web sites listed above. It's called Gwendolyn; you can download a demo version here:

http://www.dreamshare.ch/gwendolyn/downl...

(A small, PDA program of given names is available here: http://www.dreamshare.ch/english/givenna... )

And rather than a "baby names" book, try *A Dictionary of First Names* edited by Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges (one of the resources used to build the "Gwendolyn" program mentioned above).

If you're interested, here are three very good tools for discovering how popular various first names are/have been. (The first two are based on the Social Security Administration records and the 1990 census. The last allows you to view displays of how names and groups of names have risen and fallen in popularity)

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/index....

Reply:Here's a list for ya...
Reply:try this.

Reply:I'm in grad school for library science and I can't understand how people can manage to type a question in Yahoo answers, but they have no clue to search Google or Yahoo with that same questions. I did more than a hundred google searches, posting the same questions as the people in Yahoo answers...and I come up with the answers. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Alternate meanings for the name Marie?

We just found out that baby #2 is a girl and we're wanting to name her either Kaylee Marie or Kaylee Jo-Marie. Marie is a family name on both sides and not just a "filler" as some would say, but I hate the most common meaning, "bitter".

Do you know of any other origins and meanings for Marie??

Or know of a website where you can find multiple origins and meanings for the same name?

Thanks in advance!!

Alternate meanings for the name Marie?
Yeah it's "Wished-for child"

Here's the link

http://babynamer.com/Marie
Reply:Looking up everything it looks like they are basing their meaning on it's latin root, regardless if it's an english, french, or hebrew names. babynames says it's a 'sea of bitterness' look at that, you thought you had a little bitterness and here you had a whole sea.

It's my middle name and I never knew it meant bitter, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've always thought it was a very pretty name, and feel bad for its reputation as filler. I may name any daughters I have Marie just to get it back on the map.

Congrats!

p.s. I loved the character kaylee on firefly the tv show :D
Reply:I know what you mean. I have the name Mary...and Catherine as a middle name. Sometimes when I'm feeling bitter about something, I blame it on my name. I was born in Poland and my birth certificate says Maria, but my mother had it Anglicized when we arrived in America when I was 5 yrs. old. I don't really like Mary or Maria, but do like what my Polish relatives would call me....either Marisha or Marila (spelling not sure). I especially like Marisha...how do you like Kaylee Marisha?
Reply:Marie is the French form of Maria, coming from the Hebrew name 'Miriam'. Namesakes include Marie Curie, Marie Claire and Mary Antoinette.

What are the meanings of the names of the characters in "To kill a Mockingbird"?

Why did Harper chooses the name Atticus %26amp; Calpurnia? Why do Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, Jeremy "Jem" Finch %26amp; Arthur "Boo" Radley have nicknames? etc.

What are the meanings of the names of the characters in "To kill a Mockingbird"?
The nickname thing is southern culture. I have 7 aunts and uncles on my mom's side. Every one of them goes more by a nickname than their given name. Jem is short for Jeremy. Boo is a term of endearment usually for a brother. Harper Lee was from the Gulf South.

There may have been some meaning to the names Calpurnia and Atticus. Both common in ancient Greco- Roman culture. But it could have just been fashionable.
Reply:Its how people were called in their times suggesting places they are from.
Reply:atticus is latin for 'of a plain and direct syle'

calpurnia...i dunno

scout is a boyish name

boo suggests scary game
Reply:They don't have any special meaning, just names used during the setting of the story. What's important is the message of the story and the characters themselves. For me, the characters make their names memorable and not vice versa.
Reply:sometimes when you write a story...you don't choose the names....the names choose you. does that make sense?

I went and looked up my name on a site that tells meanings for names....?

and it told me that my name means "bald". Is the term "bald" some type of trait that a person has or is its only meaning, "lack of hair"?

Please don't give me guff about this, this is a very serious thing.

I went and looked up my name on a site that tells meanings for names....?
It could refer to the appearance of baldness, as in bald eagle, which has white feathers on its head. Or there's bald mountain, which is so tall that the top is above the tree line.
Reply:It could also mean lack covering (like a bald spot on the lawn) or adornment, or it could mean undisguised or blunt (like bald lie).

What are some names with bad meanings?

Can you think of any names that have negative meanings? For example:

Calvin -- "bald"

Cecilia -- "blind"

Claudia -- "lame"

Cameron -- "crooked nose"

What are some others?

And -- if you liked one of these names for your child, would its meaning bother you?

What are some names with bad meanings?
Persephone means "to kill", which really sucks considering it is a favorite name of mine.
Reply:Blaise means 'lisping' or 'stuttering'. I quite like the name Blaise, and my two excuses for using this name would be: (a) claiming to name the child after the French scientist Blaise Pascal, and (b) giving his sister the name Isabel so that the names are anagrams.

Campbell means 'crooked mouth'. Desdemona means 'ill-fated'. Jezebel means 'not exalted'. Delilah means 'delicate, weak, languishing'. Mallory means 'unfortunate'. Melville means 'bad settlement'. Persephone means 'murder' and 'to destroy' (I used to be in love with this name before I looked up the meaning... then again, what happened to the mythological character would be enough to put most people off this name). Tristan means 'riot' and 'sad'. Dolores means 'sorrows' - but I suppose this might not count considering it's a religious name.

Yes, name meaning does bother me a fair bit, even at times when I know it shouldn't. I love some biblical and Hebrew names, but am unsure if I would ever use them since most of them have meanings related to god. Being an atheist, I would not encourage a belief in any deity... So would giving my future hypothetical child a name with a religious meaning be hypocritical? I don't know. Thankfully I won't be falling pregnant any time soon.
Reply:No if I liked the name, the meaning wouldn't bother me much. All these names are from my favorites list.

Reply:Mallory. It means 'unfortunate'. It's one of those names that I find too blatantly negative to consider. I can live with Calvin, Cameron, or Cecilia. People have told me that James, which means 'usurper' is too negative to use, but it doesn't bother me.
Reply:Jezebel means "not exalted".

In the Old Testament this was the name of the evil wife of Ahab, king of Israel.

She was eaten by dogs, fulfilling Elijah's prophecy. Only Jezebel's skull, feet, and hands remained because at some time in her life, each of these body parts once did something good.
