Where is the best place to find name meanings?
What I usually do is check about 3 baby name sites and see if they have the same (or similar meanings) My favorite are:

babynames.com

babyzone.com

babynamer.com

Huge list of baby names- just type in name and it will give you meaning, all other spelling versions, sometimes history, etc.
Reply:Don't know if it is the best, but is a good one:

Reply:i can't say its the best place, but did you try a great big fat baby name book? thats usually where i look and or the libray or the internet OR THE DICTIONARY!!!!
Reply:Find out here. A very good site 4 Baby Names wth meanings etc.

Baby name meanings, where did they start?

I love the name Jacob but it has a terrible meaning.. It means supplanter .. Just wondering where all these name meanings started, how far back do they go. Why does jacob mean supplanter?

Baby name meanings, where did they start?
JACOB

One of the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. The brother of Esau, he was known also as Israel %26lt;Gen. 32:28%26gt;.

Jacob was born in answer to his father's prayer %26lt;Gen. 25:21%26gt;, but he became the favorite son of his mother %26lt;25:28%26gt;. He was nicknamed Jacob because, at the birth of the twins, "his hand took hold of Esau's heel" %26lt;25:26%26gt;. According to the accounts in Genesis, Jacob continued to "take hold of" the possessions of others-- his brother's birthright %26lt;25:29-34%26gt;, his father's blessing %26lt;27:1-29%26gt;, and his father-in-law's flocks and herds %26lt;30:25-43; 31:1%26gt;.

And so Jacob means "supplanter" as well.

As far as names go in general, of course we need a way to distinguish ourselves from each other. So words were used for names that described the child, or at least the parents' hopes for the child--whether the child would be large, small, peaceful, war-like, etc. People from different countries used words from their own languages, and so different names, pronunciations, etc. were created.
Reply:Jacob was a man in the Old Testament of the Bible I think......
Reply:Well Jacob was a man in the Old Testament of the Bible, so that one goes back to pretty much the beginning of time. The definition I have found for Jacob means "held by the heel". Not that that makes any more sense!:-) To me? It doesn't matter what a name means. If it sounds nice, who really cares?

Where can I find name meanings?

I want to find a website where I can find out the meanings of names. I am doing a big project for a family reunion. There are some unusual names in my family. My niece's name is Ireland. If there are any free sites, those are the ones I need. Thanks!

Where can I find name meanings?
Go to

http://www.babynamesworld.com/

Ireland means Land of 脡riu
Reply:You can go on babynames.com.
Reply:baby name dictionary
Reply:just start browsing the int
Reply:behindthename.com
Reply:www.babynames.com

go to search, on the top at the right.
Reply:Be careful with some of these websites, as they have to dig up meanings for some unusual or made-up names. The meanings they give are sometimes made up. Of course, Ireland is the country of Ireland -- Eire, the Emerald Isle. That sounds like a really fun project! Everyone will enjoy that!

Reply:i, too, searched without results. if you'll accept a guess, i would suspect it's a corruption of, "colours", or, "coloured", much as someone might have the surname, "black", or, "white".

Is there any specific way to find last name meanings online?

ive tried the regualr search engines...but i cant find anything. my name's too.......unorthodox.

Is there any specific way to find last name meanings online?
Try this site it's ace .http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/defa...

just type your name in the box and click what you want to find out, there is a facility to check both christian and surnames, hope it helps Diane.
Reply:Instead of looking them up online why don't you go to a city archive and do your research there? You can find precisely what you are looking for.
Reply:I've always just gone with "origin name." But you say yours in unorthodox. It could be that your name is a version of another name that got changed for any number of reasons. Perhaps try to come up with different spellings of the name. Like I know Orindgreff is a version of Orindorff, and so on.
Reply:Surnames go so far back that I don't much know how usefull "meanings" are until or unless they tie to a geographical place to aid in research.

Does your unorthodox surname denote a place?
Reply:Try this 34,000 surname database at:

Remember there may be alternate spelling you'll want to try.
Reply:I used Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com as well as the encyclopedia to find my families sir name meanings.

Does anybody know where I can find last name meanings on the web?
Hm, well there are a few sites I know that have last name meanings;

http://www.last-names.net

http://www.ancestry.com

http://genealogy.about.com/library/surna...

Though I would recommend

http://surnames.behindthename.com/

Because it has more variety, and I found meh last name on this one and not the others so...

Anyway, hope that helped you.
Reply:http://www.last-names.net/

gives a lot of info for free, but also gives you a 14 day trial so if you are looking for something specific 14 days is enough time to have full access!

I know you asked for free, but you get what you pay for and the free sites are weak. Here is a site you have to register for, but it is free: http://surnames.behindthename.com/

What is the best website to get name meanings from?
This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about your name.

Kyra

English: apparently a variant spelling of Cyra, feminine form of Cyrus, or else a feminine name formed directly from Kyran.

Hope this helps.
