What are some German Last Names and Meanings?

I am writing a Nazi story and I need a last name for Alice Wienstein's (the main character) best friend who is German. Her first name is Gretel. Can you give me some German last names AND their meanings?

What are some German Last Names and Meanings?
I think you definitly should use a typically german last name, and Gretel is usually used in Bavaria, so it should be a typical bavarian last name:

Huber

Mueller

Kaiser

Steiner

or my fav in that: Stadler.

If Gretel is actually not really a nazi: Schindler is a typical bavarian last name as well (if you know the movie Schindler's list).
Reply:One of the most common German last names is M眉ller, which means miller (after the person that used to mill flower in the olden days)

also Schmidt or Schmitt are very common

derived from Schmied = farriers/horseshoer
Reply:Pifer - Was originally Pfeiffer. Which comes from the ancestors being known as those who played the fife, a musical instrument.
Reply:Crider

from Kridel (I believe)

something about Chalk makers or something???

lol
Reply:My mom's last name is Keesee, pronounced "Kahsee". It comes from the german word for cheese maker.

Hope that helps!
Reply:Reitz...I can't find the meaning of it though

My dad is blind and he had a leader dog named Leah. She was so cute! We had her ever since I was born. But when she was 11, she got cancer, she had a BIG tumor on her stomach they did surgery on her and we thought it went away for good! But then a couple months later she got a tumor on her leg. We were all heartbroken, we went to the vet again but he said there was nothing he could do because, if he operated again she would live for a couple more months and then just develope some more tumors. She had cancer all over her body. So we decided the best choice was to put her down. I really miss her. I hope you decide to name her Leah, that lovable golden retreiver who gave us so much love. RIP!!
Reply:Please, please, nothing like "Goldie"!

Be original.

Try thinking of some celebrities you like that are the same gender of your dog, and see if any of their names would fit your dog.

Say, for instance, you like Alanis Morissette. Even if your dog's personality is not at all reminiscent of Alanis Morissette's, you may find that "Alanis" fits your dog well.

Is there any symbolic meanings attached to the name Rinehart in Ellison's 'Invisible Man'?

Is there any symbolic meanings attached to the name Rinehart in Ellison's 'Invisible Man'?
As his name suggests, Rinehart is both “rind” and “heart”; that is, he is a whole human being who doesn’t need others to validate his existence. When the narrator finally removes his metaphorical blindfold and stops seeing his reflection in the eyes of others, he becomes Rinehart and regains his sense of self.

What is the name of the term for when a word has two meanings?

Polysemy refers to cases where a lexeme (word) has more than one meaning. For example a chip can refer to a piece of wood, food, or electronic circuit: we say that the word "chip" has several different meanings in English, which are all related ("action" or "paper" are other examples of polysemous words).

Homonymy refers to cases where two (or more) different words have the same sounds. For example the word "bank" can mean a financial institution or an area of ground: these are two different words in English). Homonymous words can be either homophones = same sounds, but different spellings (ex.: I/eye; bear/bare) or homographs = same sounds and same spelling (ex bank/bank; file/file)

What is the name of the term for when a word has two meanings?
I think you are referring to the term called a "Connotation" .. When one says a word is connotative, he/she means that it means more than one straightaway comprehension. If a word bears a lot of meanings, it is referred to as a "Multiple Connotation". Hope My answer helps to a certain degree and is relevant to your query. Good Luck !
Reply:double entendre....double intention or doubly intended, i.e. two meanings meant

could also be pun, since these work on the basis of two different meanings, especially if contradictory, being simultaneously understood

The word you are looking for is homograph. This covers words spelt in the same way but of different meaning or origins (e.g. pole = piece of wood or metal and pole as in North Pole, as well as words of identical spelling but different pronunciation (e.g. lead noun and lead verb).
Reply:its either antonym or synonm
Reply:It's a homonym.

This covers both words that are spelled the same (homographs) and words that sound the same (homophones).

In english, the french term 'double-entendre' has a fairly specific meaning and is used when a rude meaning has sprung up around an otherwise innocuous word, such as hump, shag, root or pork.

it's not a synonym as that refers to two different words with the same meaning

Middle-form of Maria, the meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love".

How much stock do you put into baby name meanings?

For example...I love the name Mara and am seriously considering it for my unborn child, should he/she be a girl.

However...most any site you look up the name Mara...it has awful meanings! Bitter, bringer of death, demon...LOL...couldn't get much worse if you put lots of stock into name meanings!

It bothers me a little...but not a lot.

Was wondering if any of you love particular names, but hate the meaning associated with it and worry that it might get brought up over and over once you name your child that...?

How much stock do you put into baby name meanings?
I'm not overly fussed by baby name meanings. And Mara is lovely, regardless of the downer associations in some baby name books.

In fact, I often hear parents say things like, "Her name is Caliana Jolie. It means beautiful princess." And I think that they're putting far too MUCH stock in what baby name books tell them about names' meanings.

I think it is far more important to consider how the name will be perceived out in the world, and unfortunately, very few baby name books will tell you that.

So I'll say that Mara is a fabulous choice that is feminine, but frills-free, simple but not common and distinctive without being strange.

I'd use it without hesitation!
Reply:Personally, I don't care about the meaning associated with names - I mean most people don't know the meaning, anyway. I could care less about the supposed meaning.
Reply:I'd go for it if you really like it and it isnt bothering you too much.

Most people don't know the meanings of names..I mean, if anything your daughter would look it up and probably laugh it off, especially in her teenage years. =)

BUT if it is concerning you that, consider making it her middle name?
Reply:I did rule out potential names due to their meanings - but really it's just a mental aversion and the meanings carry no significance.

If it bugs you alot, you can always choose a longer version of the name, such as Marabelle, Maralyn or Marabeth if one of those has a more favorable meaning (I don't know if it does), and then just call her "Mara."

For what it's worth, I think Mara sounds like a lovely name.
Reply:I really cared what my daughters name ment when I was looking for a name...But that is just me, I like the name Mara....if it doesn't bauther you then don't worry about it....congrats!!
Reply:well i don't bother about the meaning to much but a name like cain means posessed the origanal biblical murderer which is kinda off putting. My daughter is called Mia which means mine and she is so thats fine with me x
Reply:I think the real question is how MUCH it bothers you personally. To be honest, most other people could care less about what the name means. But if you do name your child that, you should have a good explanation when she gets older and asks.
Reply:in all honesty i don't care what a name means. The only thing that matters to me is what it means to me. Take for example my unborn sons name it will be Xxavier, it has a very religious meaning yet when i hear and when i write al i think about is warriors. So for me it means warrior.

Do these names sound cool? And even if they do, do you have any other suggestions?Name meanings are important.?

We don't know whether it'll be a boy or girl yet, but as it took us literally years to hammer out a name we both liked for our son, we could use some help. Halia (ha-LEE-ah) Ella is one thought. Halia means rememberance of a loved one and it has been a little over a year since my mother-in-law passed. Though, since it is a rare name, do you think she'd be picked on? We're also a lot Irish so since one meaning of Ella is elfin and we have the small elfy-like ears, I thought that could be cool. Another one Jase/Jason Alden. Jase/Jason means healer and Alden means pledge (so healer's pledge. Perfect if he's a doctor ;). Whatever we choose I want it to mean something positive and preferably inspiring. Our son's name means undefeatable peace (and happily at this point, he is). While meanings are important, we're totally cool with mixing name nationalities. Please help!

Do these names sound cool? And even if they do, do you have any other suggestions?Name meanings are important.?
Jason Alden flows really well and has a great meaning combo. It's also interesting that Jason is mentioned in the Bible as someone who provided hospitality to some people that were being persecuted. Hospitality was an important value in ancient cultures and you couldn't betray someone staying in your house--almost like an honour pledge, so that fits in with the name Alden too.

I would use the full name Jason and save Jase for a nickname. That way the child would have both options and not be tied down to Jase if it turned out to be too confusing for people to pronounce or spell.

Halia Ella is pretty but just doesn't flow well. I think it is the two vowels coming together at the word break. If you like Halia, then a middle name beginning in a consonant would flow better. For example:

Halia Cara (Cara is of Gaelic origin and means "beloved; friend" so perhaps the meaning combo would be "remembrance of a beloved friend")

Halia Jade (Jade is of Spanish origin and refers to the semiprecious green stone. The stone was believed to have the magical power of providing protection against disorders of the intestines. So you've got the healing idea in there.)

Halia Kai (Kai is Hawaiian meaning "the sea". The sea is sometimes used as a metaphor for eternity or crossing into the afterlife, so it would fit well with "remembrance").

I don't see any problem with the initials you mentioned.

Best wishes!
Reply:i think what you have chosen by yourselves is great. i like halia ella but might like it better switched to ella halia. both pretty names with pretty meaning. the boy name is great too- go with jase. its a nice little spin on a a common name. and alden works good with it. jason alden both ends with 'n' so i dont think it flows as well as jase alden. good job! very well thought out names.

good luck and congrats!
Reply:While I think Halia is pretty %26amp; unusual and I like Ella -- I don't like the names together, they both have the same sound ending %26amp; I don't think they roll off the tongue together.

Halia Elise -- still would have the same initials and means consecrated to God.

Good luck %26amp; congratulations!
Reply:Halia Ella is very pretty sounding, and unique, and I like how you've brought in your Irish culture to naming.

I like the Jason Alden. Jase to the illiterate eye might come out as "jazzy", which would be annoying.

As far as teasing, kids are mean and will tease no matter what you name them. But both are lovely names.
Reply:No I like the intitials 'JAH', it could always be a nickname lol. I really like the name Ella for a girl and Jase Alden for a boy. You picked very well :)
Reply:I like both the names actually. Ella also means young girl in spanish. I like the name Jase.

I dont think either of these would cause a problem.

Good luck
Reply:Wow, you've been doing some research! I think those names are cool and meaningful in a good way. I personally like the name Santos Wes cuz its a mix of latin and.....american I guess.... I love your names though.
Reply:Just come up cool off the wall names that you like. My sons' name are Jarrod Liono and Kamdor Ninjor.
Reply:I think the name Halia is very pretty. Halia Ella sounds nice, but it trips the tongue a little. Have you thought about looking into Gaelic names, since you're Irish? I also kind of like Halia Fay (or Fae).

I think Jason Alden is perfect. I would go with Jason and the nickname Jase, if you want to use Jase. It will give him an alternative if he wants something a little different.

Does the baby name Connor have any bad meanings in Spanish?

My husband's family is Latino and I just wanted to make sure that before I name my baby this that it wouldn't be a problem with bad translation or nicknames. Anybody?

Does the baby name Connor have any bad meanings in Spanish?
Well, from what other people said, I don't think that it should be an issue. The first part of the name is not a good word in French, but a name, even if he has a word inside of it that is inappropriate, is still a name and it doesn't have a link to an obscenity.
Reply:there's a boy at my school named connor, and everyone thought we was mexican, turns out he was jewish... weird. i dont think there are any bad transilations!
Reply:No because in spanish the would still say connor. They would just pronounce it a little differently.
Reply:Connor is a very Anglo name and they might not like that...they are very much all about SONS...they may insist he be called Pedro...
Reply:nope not bad at all .. nice name

Do people research name meanings?

I'm amazed at some of these names I'm seeing in here. Doesn't anyone know that Bailey meant the outer wall of a castle or alternatively, its KITCHEN area?

Does anyone know that COY means quiet and shy? And that Coy lends itself to be mocked with coydog?

Why do people make up their kids' names? If people want something unique, remember that your KID WILL GROW UP TO BE AN INDIVIDUAL. Giving him/her an abnormal name will lead to a lifetime (a lifetime, people, 80 years!) of frustration (with trying to explain how to say their name because it defies established rules of pronunciation, for example) and possibly embarassment. (Venerea or Corona, anyone?)

Out of curiosity, what level of education does a person have who names their child after a beer?

Please tell me I'm not alone and that someone understands what I'm trying to say.

Do people research name meanings?
I know what you mean! Recently I have encountered a 3 year old girl named McCoy (her first name), two other girls named Hunter (why not just name her Killer?) and Tanner (one who makes leather from animal skins) and a newborn girl named Unique (who isn't unique?!?). Some parents seem so determined to find a 'different' name that they lose all sense and just go for a sound they like, regardless of meaning. And some of those parents think that odd names make their children look like they are high class... Instead, they just look silly. Those unfortunate children.
Reply:I definitely research name definitions, but I know that many people don't seem to care i.e. I know someone who named her daughter Medea (the Greek character who murdered her own children). Eventually you have to accept that it is their choice, even as you may pity their children.
Reply:Your name must mean something along the lines of: A mountain out a molehill.

By the way, my name translates into raspberry in Russian and honey in Greek (or yellow bird). I hate my name and it's hard for some to pronounce but I like what it means. So maybe it's not too bad.
Reply:i know i do (research names at least) but sweetie if you're gonna sit there and complain about people naming their kids weird names, you're gonna be there for a while. "to each his own" there's no law that says parents cannot name their kids after castle walls or mocking. why do you care what they name thier kids? if those kids have any sense, they'll change their names when they get older. and if not, well hey maybe they like their individuality.

bottom line is, as long as people have free choice, they'll do whatever it is they want. you can't stop 'em and neither can i no matter how much we want to.
Reply:"I'm asking because having been out of the baby-naming scene for quite some time, I'm unused to seeing such untraditional names."

You know, most "abnormal" names that are hard to pronounce are traditional names from cultures you aren't used to, because the kid's family comes from another country. It's not abnormal to them.

Names made up by people who speak English are easy to pronounce in English, because they spell them based on how they sound. Anyone who speaks English natively can pronounce Venerea or Corona.
Reply:SISTER YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!!!

I've been ranting about this subject for years. Let me give you an example.

I used to be an insurance agent running a home service debit. One of my customers had a baby and wanted to add her to her existing life insurance policy.

I started filling out the application and when I got down to the part where I needed information on the child, I asked what the baby's full name was. Mama, aged 19 or 20, said and I quote verbatim, "I can't pronounce it, let me go get the paper." I was dumbfounded.

The girl came back with one of those cute and frilly little certificates the hospital gives new mothers. I can't begin to remember the spelling, but as God is my witness, the baby's first name was 21, yes twenty-one, letters long, and the middle name 18, yes EIGHTEEN, letters long.

I looked at the certificate and then glared at the new mama, she started to squirm even before I spoke. I could not keep it in, I didn't care if I blew the sale or not. I told her flat out, "You ought to be slapped for pulling such a dirty trick on a poor defenseless infant."

Mama whined, "My sista she come up with it."

"Then she ought to be slapped too!" I blasted.

From across the room, little sister chimed in, "It a African name."

On a roll, I let loose my anger,"And just when is this baby going to Africa? Is this poor innocent child going to grow up in Africa or in Belzoni, MS? You've saddled this poor baby with an unpronounceable name that won't even fit into the name blocks on a government form. This child will have her name mangled all of her life, and when she starts school, all the other kids will make fun of her name. You really ought to have your butt kicked!"

I actually made the sale! I ended up just putting the baby's initials on the application.

Next time I went to collect, the girls' Mother was home. She said, "I heard about you giving these girls down the road. You didn't tell 'em anything I didn't tell 'em. I agree with you entirely."

I know we are probably wasting our breath, people will continue to give children idiotic names, but I intend to keep campaigning for sensible, and traditional names.

BTW, it could actually be worse. Down Argentina way, in the 1960's and 1970's, it became fashionable to load babies with a multitude of names. It got so bad that some time in the late 1970's the government issued a decree that it would be considered unlawful to give a child more than ten given names.

Doc
Reply:The person who suggested Venerea and Corona was probably joking. This is apparent if you look at their previous questions.

While I understand what you're saying (I have my fair share of pet peeves when it comes to names, Naveah "heaven spelled backwards" being a personal source of frustration) I hate when people insist on purely common names. Plenty of people hate my list of favorite names (I favor long forgotten, old fashioned names, like Balthazar, Edgar, Ichabod, Finbar, Viola, Prudence) and would declare them a "horrible thing to do to a child." Personally, I'd rather be a Hyacinth or an Ebeneezer than another Madison or John. So, who am I to judge anyone else's choice of names?
Reply:I completely agree with you. With the recent birth of our second daughter, my husband and I didn't come up with a name until a day after she was born. with our last name being one that a child can easily be made fun of for, we had a very hard time making sure nothing sounded inappropriate, that no "nicknames" would cause ridicule. we even had to make sure the initials would be OK. It amazes me that some people don't take into consideration that the child will have to live with the name they are given.
Reply:Actually, you have shown your ignorance.

Bailey has been a boys name since I was

in school 30 years ago.

Now it's a girls name.

Corona is a Spanish name meaning Crown.

I've never heard of anyone called Coy or Venerea.

Some people have poor taste.

I would think it's better they ask for other's opinion.
Reply:Lots of people share your opinion, and there are people in society who make judgments about people before/when they meet them based on their names.

On the other hand, it is nice to have a variety. I have a million Sarahs, Edwards, Emmas, and Davids in my classes.

Back to being on your side...DMV hasn't spelled my first name correctly for a decade.

Domain name meanings?

Ok I need some help understanding this?

Ok here is my hosts features page:

http://www.hostmonster.com/hosting-featu...

As you can see they have unlimited domains, add-on domains etc and I need to know what that means?

Does having unlimited add on domains mean If my domain is example.com I can add another domain like sample.com for free?

Or does that mean if I had sample.com registered like at 1and1.com I could put it with my hosting account and share the disk space and bandwidth with example.com for free?

I really need help with this?!

And if you only want to answer the first part thats fine but could somone give a link that explains what a:

add-on domain

parked domain

sub domain

and what it means to have unlimited domain mean?

Thanks!

Domain name meanings?
Do not be so happy with unlimited domains, the moment traffic increases hostmonster might ask you to upgrade web hosting package. You also check review of top ten web hosting service providers at website like http://aplis.net/ .
Reply:Don't confuse yourself. It means you can host unlimited domains on 1 account!

In other words, you can buy other domains from host monster, or other sites like 1and1, godaddy... and host all of them by your account with Host Monster. You don't need to pay any new payment for that. You can use your current disc space and bandwidth for all them together.

At present I own 4 different websites which I host them by my account with hostmonster. They have a really great offer for hosting %26amp; I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

Are there other meanings for the name Samantha?

other than listener or a good listener!

Are there other meanings for the name Samantha?
Samantha means combined name

It is a Very Pretty!!!

There is a misconception that the name Samantha is an old English or Hebrew name. In reality, the name Samantha was first recorded in the Southern U.S. just after 1800. Most likely it is a combined name from Samuel (Sam) and Anthea.
Reply:i found that it means- listener of God in hebrew.

Where do they get the name meanings in the bible? isnt these another indication of the bible's "fictionality"

im quoting from someone's answer.

"Nimrod (which means rebellious) built the Tower of Babel in an attempt to get to heaven. "

i know parents dont name their children rebelious..

Babel means "confusion". (you name your city confusion. what a great idea.)

Where do they get the name meanings in the bible? isnt these another indication of the bible's "fictionality"
"Babel" is composed of two words, "baa" meaning "gate" and "el," "god." Hence, "the gate of god." A related word in Hebrew, "balal" means "confusion."

No, this does not indicate the Bible is fictional. Just because you don't understand doesn't mean it's not the truth. The Bible is historically and archaeologically accurate.
Reply:It was named gate of God because those building it wanted to reach heaven. They may have had another name for it, but it was never completed. Since it wasn't completed it really wasn't named. It is an event along with the structure that is "remembered" as the Tower of Babel. Better? Report Abuse

Reply:Sorry, but what exactly is your question???
Reply:The Bible is a fictional story. seriously, who the hell can walk on water? its impossible. all of it is a bunch of bs.
Reply:You and that person know nothing about ancient Middle eastern customs....so the both of you are stupid for ranting about something you are not educated enough to critique.
Reply:You have it all backwards. Those names existed before their meaning did. I will give you a few examples ,the word hooker , meaning a prostitute came from the civil war General Hooker. And the word side burn came from the civil war General Burnside.Allot of words were created because of people's influence on history. The word pasteurize, as in pasteurized milk came from Dr, Pasteur who came up with the idea. Do you understand now .The word crap came from the inventor of the modern toilet, Thomas Crapper.
Reply:actually, jewish names are just hebrew words, or phrases. my jewish name is ayelet which means deer. one of my sisters jewish name is bat-shir which means daughter of song. my brother is ari, which means lion. my cousin's is issachar which means "there is a reward" and my friend's is idan which means "historical period". my father's is amichai which means "my people live"

there are not really any hebrew names that are just babble, they are all words or phrases pretty much, even israeli town names
Reply:The names in the bibles come from the respective times in questions. I believe over the years the languages themselves have evolved due to trade with other cultures, so it makes sense that their meanings would be different.
Reply:Nimrod's name in his own language probably didn't mean rebellious. But when it got translated into Hebrew, it did.

A modern example is how Hamas is just an acronym in Arabic, but in Hebrew, it is a word which means "Violence." (probably not a coincidence by the way).

Baby name meanings?

Do you believe that the meaning of a name will have any effect on your child's personality?? For example, my daughter Payton is my wild child, very difficult and stubborn. Her name means "aggressive". I'm pregnant with my 3rd baby now, and looking for names but now I'm really noticing the meaning before I choose. Opinions???

Baby name meanings?
No, that's putting too much weight to it. Relax! :)
Reply:No. I know two people named Brittany (a friend and a girl I grew up with). They are complete opposites. A name may affect how others perceive a person, but personality is a combination of environment and genetics.
Reply:yer
Reply:I do think it can have something to do with it. Im not that spiritually into it. My name means Butterfly, and I don't see what I could possibly have in common with that....
Reply:To look up baby name meanings, see the following websites:

http://www.babynamesworld.com/

http://www.babynames.com/

Good Luck!
Reply:well it's interesting to compare what they're like to their name meanings, but that doesn't mean every payton is going to have the same personality
Reply:I do think the name of a child has an effect on their personality, My son is called Craig which is scottish for Crag or Rock and over the years thats exactly what he has been to me a Rock, He is steady and out going. My Daughter on the other hand has a made up name from her dads, he is called Jon Charles and before she was born I called him Jc So we called her Jaycee she is stubborn, strong willed, independent but also loving and affectionate but I have no idea if her name means anything.
Reply:Some people regard meanings as pretty high up when choosing a name, but I am not one of them. I hardly pay attention to them and do not know the meanings for all my favorite names - even. I like names that are easy to pronounce, have a lovely sound, and are a bit unique. I don't believe meanings affect personality (that's just me.)

www.babycenter.com has a neat tool where you can search for names by meaning OR find a meaning by typing in the particular name.
Reply:No, I don't. That's why I don't think names are a big deal- the child will describe the name, not the name the child. My daughter Lizzie is very down to earth, calm- so her name seems calm.
Reply:Yes i think so. Does your daughter know the meaning of her name? because it's sometimes a psycological impulse to live up to what your name is. Example, my name means follower of christ, and i'm catholic. Could be coincidence, could be not. I have come to learn that the name Michelle will result in a problematic kid. I know two people named Michelle, one got herself knocked up and got married at the age of 20 (not one of the nicest people i know) the other smokes and drinks ( but is a great friend). So be careful.
Reply:NO....how does a baby know what its name means? Hell, my name is Tara....the meaning is something w/ land and another meaning i have heard is "a tower" but i am short...nothing towards a personality or anything....I think you may be reading into a bit much...

I'm trying to think of a really creative, unique, and just overall out there name for my daughter before she's born. I've considered names from a variety of languages, but the only one that really stuck was Raiha which is Japanese, only I really want to know what it means...i've been to several sights including "Behind the Name" and although their descriptions are detailed, they don't include Raiha or any of the other names I have considered. Last name meanings??

I want to know what the last name Musclow is from and Freeman, Ray and Whitehead??? Thanks a ton if you answer!

Last name meanings??
Musclow is from Germany via Hastings Ontario..

Freeman is from any country where some men weren't free and some were. Those who became freed took the name "Freeman". It could have been Germany, the Caribbean or Blacks from the southern US who made their way to freedom in the North or in Canada.

Ray comes from more than 20 countries. There's no way of giving it an ethnic designation out of context.

Whitehead is English and comes from an ancestor who literally had a white head...a serious blonde.

I'm making a big guess, but do you or did your parents' families come from Canada?
Reply:I couldn't find anything in connection with the surname *Musclow* , I did find this information regarding the other three names though.

Surname: Freeman

The Anglo-Saxon society was divided into various classes, of which "The Freeman" could be described as "Middle Class" in 20th Century terms, although direct comparisons are not possible. Certainly to be a "Free born person" denoted considerable and jealously guarded status. Since most people were effectively slaves. The surname derivation is from the pre 7th Century "freo" meaning "free born" and "man" a servant or worker. The 1188 Pipe Rolls for Essex record one Freman Sceil, and this shows the use of the compound as a rare personal name. Other recordings include Reginald Le Freman, of Worcester in 1221, and Osbert Friman of Bedford in 1240. Edward Freeman (1823 - 1892), wrote "The History of the Norman Conquest" in 1867, whilst James Freeman of Nottingham, who died on June 20th 1968, was the last known survivor of the famous charge of the 21st Lancers at Omdurman, Sudan, in 1898. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Freeman, which was dated 1196, in the "County Pipe Rolls of Norfolk", during the reign of King Richard 1, known as "The Lionheart", 1189 - 1199. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surname: Ray

This is a surname with one of the most ancient origins. It derives from an Olde British word 'ea' pronounced 'ay' and describes someone who lived by a stream. More pragmatically it probably referred to somebody who lived on dry land by a stream, since before the days of land drainage to find 'dry land' was vital. It is true that some nameholders particularly those who originate in the Sussex - Kent region of England, may derive from the town of Rye, which means what it says - 'the place where corn was grown'. In Early English the descriptive phrase was 'aet paere ea' (at the island) which by the Middle ages had become 'at ther ee', and thence was further shortened to 'atte rie' and hence the modern surname which can be found as Ray, Rea, Reay, Wrey, Raye, and even Nye, formerly 'atten ea'! Examples of early recordings include William atte Rea in the 1327 Subsidy Rolls of Sussex, William bith Ree in the 1293 rolls of Worcester, and John atte Reye in the Essex Rolls of 1327. The Coat of Arms granted in Northumberland has the blazon of a blue field, a plate between three silver crescents. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ralph de la Reye, which was dated 1279, in the Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire, during the reign of King Edward 1, known as 'The hammer of the Scots', 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surname: Whitehead

Recorded in a number of spellings including Whithead, Whitehed, Whithed, and Whitsed, this surname is of English origins. It usually derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century word "hwit" meaning white, plus "heafod", a head, combined to form a descriptive nickname for someone with white hair. Many early surnames originate from medieval nicknames, and this is one of them. With men generally dying at about age forty, and women even younger, people with white hair were quite rare. Early recordings of the surname include Roger Witheved, who appeared in the Hundred Rolls of Huntingdonshire, dated 1273, and Adam Whytehevde of Hoton, who was a juror on an inquisition before the sheriff of Berwick in 1300. In 1338 Robert Whitede was recorded in the Manorial Records of Sheffield, Yorkshire. Occasionally, the name may derive from "Hwithod", meaning white hood, and an occupational name for one who made white hoods for use in monasteries. An early example is that of Agnes Wythod recorded in the Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire, for 1279. Finally, but more rarely, the name may be locational from residence on a chalky headland, as in Henry de Whiteheved, of Cornwall, in 1297. Recordings from surviving early London registers include: the marriage of John Whitehead and Margret Malwins on August 13th 1564, Srah Whithed, christened at St Giles Cripplegate, on October 13th 1643, and Richard Whitshead, who married Alice Rye at St James Paddington, on October 4th 1783. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Whithaved. This was dated 1219, in the "Pipe Rolls" of Leicestershire, during the reign of King Henry 111rd, 1216 - 1272. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

I found four different meanings just by visiting 2 sites. I found the same name can have multiple meanings in different cultures, ask your parents which meaning they were going for or pick the one you like the best.
Reply:The girl's name Maya \ma-ya\ is pronounced MYE-ah. It is of Spanish, Hindi and Russian origin. In Spanish, short form of Amalia. In Hindi, from Sanskrit, meaning "dream, illusion". In Russian, a form of Mary. A star constellation. See also Mai.

i dnt think names say much about our personalities, like my name Lucie, means light and is the french version or something, that doesn't rly explain anything about who i am.
Reply:Yes names mean a lot and they say nothing. The picture is like a ripe peach on the green tree the reds and peach colors are there and the eye of a girl. So I guess it is all true. I believe your ancestor's guide the name choosing in life and it has to fit your personality before you arrived here on earth. My name is associated with integrity and singleness and it seems to be true.
Reply:your far to young to be worrying about being a sex goddess... infact you shouldn't really even know all that much about sex...

Maya is a feminine name with multiple meanings. In Hindu mythology M膩y膩 (啶ぞ啶ぞ in Sanskrit) means "illusion" and is also an alternate name of the Hindu goddess Durga. According to tradition, Queen M膩y膩 of Sakya was also the name of the mother of Siddartha Gautama, the Buddha. In Hebrew, the name Maya (诪址讬指旨讛 in Hebrew) is a short form of "ma'ayan," meaning "spring" or "brook." It is also used as a variant form of the Greek-origin name Maia (螠伪喂伪 in Ancient Greek), the eldest of the Pleiades in Greek and Roman mythology. It can also be a name used as a tribute to the Maya peoples of southern Mexico and northern Central America or to the Maya, a group of Indigenous Australians. Sometimes spelled Maja, it can also be used as a short form of Maria or Mary in Germany, Scandinavian countries, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia. Maya is also used as a short form for the name Amalia or the Basque name Amaia or Amaya (meaning "the end") in Spanish-speaking countries. Maya can also be a name of Japanese origin, with different meanings. Variants include Mayako and Mayaka. Mount Maya is a Japanese mountain named for the mother of Buddha. The similar sounding Japanese name Mayu means "truth, reason," while some sources say Amaya (pronounced A-MAH-YAH) is a Japanese name meaning "night rain" [1] [2]

Maya has been a popular name for girls in recent years. It is currently in the top hundred names used for baby girls in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Norway, and Israel as well as in other countries.[3] Alternate spellings proliferate, with the name sometimes spelled Maia, Mya, or Myah. The similar name Mia is also sometimes used as a spelling variant of Maya.

Name meanings?

With Bulgarian names. If the surname ends in 'OV' does that imply that it is a man and if it ends in OVA does it imply its a female of the same family?.Does it also mean they are family members or married?

Name meanings?
Well if its similar to Russian, I would surmise that OV is the masculine form and OVA the feminine. As in Pavlov and Pavlova.(the family Pavlov)

Name meanings?

my little sister is needing a website to find out what her name means for a school project and I am not having any luck her name is Kaylyn!

Thanks in Advance!

Name meanings?
According to www.babynamesworld.com Kaylyn is Gaelic and means slender.
Reply:babynames.com should help! =]
Reply:Like someone stated it's a combination of Kay and the suffix -lyn. Kay on the other hand is a nickname for Katherine, which is derived from the Greek original Aikaterine. The etymology is debated and there are several alternative theories (and thus meanings). I suggest you check the link for more details.

The site (behindthename.com) is the one I'd recommend for anyone interested in detailed and accurate information. Since it's not a baby name site per se it doesn't oversimplify the meanings or pick the ones that sound the best to parents. Recommended.

What does the name Mirellamean?

-girls name.

Name meanings?
Mirella mean admire... according to: http://www.babynamesworld.com/meaning_of...

Mireille was created by the French poet Fr茅d茅ric Mistral, as the title of one of his verse romance. He later named his daughter this, the first ever to be baptized Mireille, in 1861. When the priest inquired about the name, Mistral claimed that it was a Proven莽al form of Marie, from the Latin verb "mirare" (to admire). This explanation is false as Marie is not related to 'mirare', yet Mireille could indeed be an elaborated form of it.

Name Meanings?

What does From The Hay Clearing mean? cuz thats what my name means. Haleigh

Name Meanings?
Its like when you read a book and they say someone was in the woods and they came upon a clearing. A hay clearing is just like that a clearing is something that is clear or empty of the things around it for instance a forest cleaning is a place that is open right in the middle of the forest but it has no trees in that spot, so like that a hay clearing is a place surrounded by hay that has no hay in it.
