ive tried the regualr search engines...but i cant find anything. my name's too.......unorthodox.
Is there any specific way to find last name meanings online?
Try this site it's ace .http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/defa...
just type your name in the box and click what you want to find out, there is a facility to check both christian and surnames, hope it helps Diane.
Reply:Instead of looking them up online why don't you go to a city archive and do your research there? You can find precisely what you are looking for.
Reply:I've always just gone with "origin name." But you say yours in unorthodox. It could be that your name is a version of another name that got changed for any number of reasons. Perhaps try to come up with different spellings of the name. Like I know Orindgreff is a version of Orindorff, and so on.
Reply:Surnames go so far back that I don't much know how usefull "meanings" are until or unless they tie to a geographical place to aid in research.
Does your unorthodox surname denote a place?
Reply:Try this 34,000 surname database at:

Remember there may be alternate spelling you'll want to try.
Reply:I used Genealogy.com and Ancestry.com as well as the encyclopedia to find my families sir name meanings.
